Each fall, Socrates presents an exhibition of new commissions made by artists awarded ‘The Socrates Annual’ fellowship. Produced on-site in our outdoor studio over the course of the summer, these artworks engage the Park\u2019s unique history, landscape, and surrounding community.<\/p>\n
For the 2019 exhibition, projects range from a https:\/\/socratessculpturepark.org\/artist\/martin-roth\/soundscape conflating the sounds of animals and man-made objects to https:\/\/socratessculpturepark.org\/artist\/lucia-thome\/a monument to the invasive Ailanthus plant. Approaches vary among https:\/\/socratessculpturepark.org\/artist\/wac\/collaborative investigations of authorship and visibility, the https:\/\/socratessculpturepark.org\/artist\/chris-domenick\/re-contextualization of domestic motifs, and the https:\/\/socratessculpturepark.org\/artist\/jes-fan\/examination of biological material, among many others.<\/p>\n
Ranging from fantastical to anecdotal to pedagogical, this year\u2019s artists use a variety of narrative strategies. Several artist projects examine storytelling\u2019s many material manifestations, from an https:\/\/socratessculpturepark.org\/artist\/tecumseh-ceaser\/homage to a Native American myth in which North America exists on a turtle\u2019s back to a https:\/\/socratessculpturepark.org\/artist\/hadrien-gerenton-loup-sarion\/suggestion that a giant has fallen asleep under the Park\u2019s blanket of grass, its exposed nose becoming refuge for a wandering monitor lizard.
