A curated series presented by Pioneers Go East Collective, Crossroads Series features
\ninterdisciplinary artists who explore new genres and known performance and art-making
\nmodes to share their creative practices with other artists and their audiences. Each evening, we
\nwitness different generations of artists dealing with actual, day-to-day, contemporary
\nchallenges to further discussion between artists and to activate a network of exchange and
\ninclusion with social and artistic intervention.<\/p>\n

I am a bi-racial Black woman of Caribbean heritage navigating the world through time and trance-based movement practices. I value dance as a vital conduit for existential and ancestral knowledge, believing that the body holds ancient wisdom only accessible through movement. My objective as an artist is to create language and environments that mirror this truth, guiding others to experience it within themselves. My praxis is deeply rooted in philosophy. I propose that dance encompasses anything that moves; thus, any existing entity or object possesses the capacity to dance or be perceived as such. Demonstrating this theory, my physical output embodies the concept that dance is a natural phenomenon, which can be dissected into two sub-concepts. First, dance is an innate and pre-existing entity, integral to human nature. Second, the body, composed of matter derived from natural elements such as the Earth and land, is itself a reflection of nature, making dance a personification of nature\u2019s elements. My physical practice \u2013an improvisational amalgamation of somatics, butoh principles, raving, and ancestral channeling\u2013 enables me to engage tangibly and energetically with these elements on the physical and spiritual planes. I practice durationally to achieve a trance state, where I believe the mind, body, and spirit converge in energetic confluence. It is from this apex that I craft my work, exploring the intersections of movement, energy, and spirit. What if the body could serve as a channel for transmitting energy and wisdom both subliminally and abstractly, influencing our surroundings to create safer, more holistic, and more livable ecosystems? With this question at the heart of everything I create, I construct experiential ecosystems that delve into themes of legacy, time, humanity, and love. Fascinated by the ways we embody our ancestors, often unconsciously, I infuse my work with references to ecology and botany as metaphors for lineage and generational inheritance. My investment in presenting palpably human experiences inspires me to open portals which guide both the purveyors and spectators of my work into flow state. If an audience member is left thinking \u201cI\u2019ve felt that before\u201d or \u201cI think I can do that,\u201d I have achieved my goal.<\/p>\n

As a performer, dance-maker, Breathwork facilitator, personal trainer, tattooer, writer and collaborator – all of my work intersects at the body as a site of potential. Through practices of shapeshifting, dissolving, becoming another body, merging, melding, wailing, laughing and being overtaken by forces outside of myself, I seek to access new portals to my own humanity and the humanity of others. I make work that stems from collaboration and that is interested in creating new worlds together. Using the voice, humor, dancing, clowning, text and visual elements like costumes and props, I seek to facilitate an embodied experience for the audience as well as for myself and the performers. I seek to crack open our reality as we know it and insert something ridiculous and beautiful that may change our collective state.<\/p>\n

Drag, dance, installation, video, theater, sound; Lavy, everything and nothing into the expression of my being, my body of work is rooted in creating vulnerable, expressive, and fantastically abstract narratives of self inquiry. Sinking into the intertwined tether of queerness and identity, creation from rage. Creation from necessity. Creation from a repetitious desire to deconstruct and question our habitual behaviors. I play to experiment, and I experiment to fail: over and over again, process is integral to my creation environment. As the playground emerges, themes of surveillance, perception, and body history frame themselves into the tools of our research.
\nAbout Pioneers Go East Collective
\nPioneers Go East Collective is a radical Queer laboratory collective dedicated to dance-theater and video art to empower the LGBTQ experience. An artist-driven collective, we create works of high artistic merit, speak out about social issues and build a platform to positively impact the LGBTQ community. Based in NYC, the collective is led by BIPOC and\/or immigrant artists and cultural organizers Gian Marco Riccardo Lo Forte, Daniel Diaz, Philip Trevi\u00f1o, Joyce Isabelle, Joey Kipp, Remi Harris, and Anabella Lenzu. We portray same-gender-loving experiences, memory, and marginalization that resonate with contemporary lives. The collective combines stories of vulnerability and courage with popular culture to facilitate communal meaning and advocate for cultural integrity. Our work has been widely presented in NYC at Judson Church, La MaMa, Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance, St Ann’s Warehouse, The LGBT Center, JACK, Exponential Festival, LMCC’s Process Space at Governors Island, Chashama Gallery, Incubator Arts Project, New Dance Alliance, and Goethe Institut.
