Performed by Sandra Soto and accompanied by violinist Sita Chay, the dance performance is based on the \u2018Danza de los Viejitos\u2019 (Dance of the Little Old Men) from the Pur\u00e9pecha region in Michoac\u00e1n, Mexico. The dance is traditionally performed by four male danzantes representing fire, water, earth, and air. \u2018Danza de los Viejitos\u2019 originated in pre-Hispanic times as an offering to the Old God, Grandfather Sun, and to the four Pur\u00e9pecha regions. The dance later became a critique and protest against colonization by Spain, while also celebrating the resilience and strength of the Pur\u00e9pecha communities.
