The Socrates Sculpture Park offers a view of Manhattan from the rough side. The care and effort put into reclaiming the land has not progressed far enough to disguise the chain-link fences topped with razorwire, and the scattered rocks, refuse and concrete buttresses.<\/p>\n
My first and ultimate response was to build an enclosure \u2014 ‘to walk into’ \u2014 which would provide a visual and physical refuge from everything but the sky. A narrow walkway around the inside walls keeps you connected to the work.<\/p>\n
“Quadrel” is meant to be both hard and soft; affecting but not belonging to that which surrounds it. From within, there is a possibility for escape.
