Join us for Lotic Time, a culminating event showcasing collaborative performances by the Jazz Foundation of America and Valerie Green\/Dance Entropy. About the Performers Blue Reality Quartet<\/p>\n
Warren Smith, Joe McPhee, Michael Marcus, Jay Rosen<\/p>\n
Founded in 2018 at a one-off gig in Austria, the Blue Reality Quartet has evolved a potent group sound, unique in avant-garde jazz. Their pandemic-era recording debut, Love Exists Everywhere, \u201cshowcase[d] the meticulous technique and impressionistic explorations of four free-jazz masters\u201d (Lissette Corsa, Jazziz), qualities that were further in evidence on the follow-up Ella\u2019s Island. Though this balanced reeds-and-percussion musical unit functions democratically, special mention should be made of of its constituent members. Percussionist Warren Smith is among the music\u2019s most esteemed and prolifically recorded artists, and saxophonist Joe McPhee is a hero in creative music; they have appeared on over 1000 recordings between them. Michael Marcus (whose 2001 Soul Note album inspired the name for the group) has distinguished himself in collaboration with a wide variety of musical legends including Albert King, Jaki Byard, and Sonny Simmons. Drummer Jay Rosen ties it all together through his longtime affiliations with both Marcus in the Cosmosamatic and McPhee in TrioX as well his work with legendary experimentalists including Anthony Braxton and Charles Gayle.<\/p>\n

J.D. Parran N\u2019 the Spirit<\/p>\n
J.D. Parran, Andrew Drury, Alexis Marcelo, Sharif Kales<\/p>\n
J.D. Parran plays all the saxophones (from soprano to bass), as well as multiple clarinets and flutes. His virtuosity, and his mastery over a number of extended techniques for these instruments, has made him a valued collaborator with Leroy Jenkins, Julius Hemphill, Anthony Braxton and others.<\/p>\n
\u201cJD represents the ideal performer of my music,\u201d writes composer and pianist Anthony Davis. \u201cHe combines a profound understanding of the composer\u2019s intention with an expressive individual voice that is both nuanced and dramatic.\u201d He participated in St. Louis\u2019 rich African-American music scene in the 1970s, working with the famed Black Artists\u2019 Group and the Human Arts Ensemble, before moving to New York and collaborating with leading contemporary improvisers and composers such as Douglas Ewart, Derek Bailey and James Jabbo Ware, as well as with musicians including Stevie Wonder and John Lennon. He has appeared on over 45 recordings and released several albums as a leader, including\u00a0 J.D. Parran & Spirit Stage, (2005), Omegathorp: Living City (2005)and Window Spirits: Solo (2010).<\/p>\n

Art Baron and the Psychacoustic Band<\/p>\n

Master trombonist Art Baron has led a long and varied career. After completing studies at Berklee College of Music, he made a notable appearance on Stevie Wonder’s Music of My Mind, and then joined the Duke Ellington Band at age 23. He went on to work with many major artists including Buddy Rich, Sam Rivers, Bruce Springsteen, and Lou Reed. As a composer and arranger, he has had commissions from Jazz at Lincoln Center and the New York Composers\u2019 Orchestra. In recent years he has been found carrying on the big band legacy in the Harlem Blues and Jazz band and his own Duke’s Men. The Psychacoustic Band centers his legacy in the downtown scene.<\/p>\n

Oluyemi Thomas & Ijeoma Thomas<\/p>\n
\u201cPositive Knowledge\u201d is a performance duo that features multi-instrumentalist Oluyemi Thomas (bass clarinet, saxophones and percussion) and Ijeoma Thomas (voice and percussion). Their compositions emerge from a long, intense, and ongoing involvement with American improvisational and jazz traditions, as reconfigured through their participation in the musical life of other cultures. Both performers have undertaken extended musical travels, in sub-Saharan and northern Africa, the Middle East, and South America, as well as Europe and North America. For many listeners, their performances themselves resemble a journey, though not to any known places. The works of \u201cPositive Knowledge\u201d undertake an ecstatic quest of the spirit, seeking the uncommon sounds of sense, correspondence, and borderless harmony.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jessica Pavone Solo<\/p>\n
As both an instrumentalist and composer, violist Jessica Pavone explores the tactile and sensory experience of music as a vibration-based medium. Pavone has been a composer in residence at Loghaven, Stove Works, the Ragdale Foundation, Ucross Foundation, and Soaring Gardens, and has received grants and commissions from the NYFA NYC Womens Fund (2023), MATA Festival (2023), Foundation for Contemporary Arts (2021), Queens Council on the Arts (2022, 2020), New Music USA (2015), the Tri-Centric Foundation (2015), Experiments in Opera (2013), and the Jerome Foundation (2011). Her works have premiered in NYC venues, including; Roulette, the Noguchi Museum, ISSUE Project Room, Abrons Art Center, the Museum of Art and Design, and The Kitchen. Her albums have been produced by Tzadik, Taiga Records, Thirsty Ear, Astral Spirits, and Relative Pitch, including four collaborative duo recordings with guitarist Mary Halvorson. From 2005 to 2012, Pavone toured regularly with Anthony Braxton\u2019s Sextet and 12+1tet, and she appears on his discography from that time.<\/p>\n

Ronnie Burrage<\/p>\n
St Louis-born Drummer, percussionist, keyboardist, composer, arranger, bandleader and music educator Ronnie Burrage has a style drawn most notably from the musical genres of \u201cjazz\u201d, \u201cfunk\u201d and \u201csoul\u201d. After an active musical childhood and studies at the University of North Texas, he moved to New York City at age 17 and began playing with jazz musicians similarly rooted in St Louis–John Hicks, Hamiet Bluiett, and Lester and Joseph Bowie. With the latter he was a founding member of Defunkt. Sideman work with greats like Sonny Fortune, McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins, and Jackie McLean informed his own style as a leader, beginning with the Burrage Band which featured notables Kenny Kirkland, Marcus Miller, Wallace Roney and Wynton and Branford Marsalis. For this performance he and bassist Nimrod Speaks collaborates with Valerie Green\/Dance Entropy, in response to Mary Mattingly\u2019s Ebb of a Spring Tide. Valerie Green has been an active dancer, choreographer and teacher in the New York City dance community since 1995.\u00a0 She created her own company, Dance Entropy in 1998, adding a permanent company home in 2005 called Green Space.\u00a0 Green Space serves the dance community by providing an affordable and welcoming environment for rehearsals, classes, and performances.\u00a0 To date Ms. Green has created 42 dances and 11 evening length works.\u00a0 Her choreography has been seen throughout NYC and has also toured to various venues throughout the US.\u00a0 Internationally she has taught and performed in Albania, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Bosnia, Burkina Faso, Canada, Colombia, Croatia, Cuba, France, Georgia, Greece, Guatemala, India, Italy, Lebanon, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, and Sweden.\u00a0 As a teacher, Green leads movement workshops for all populations rooted in the philosophy that all bodies can benefit from dance, fostering creativity and physicality beyond the stage. Valerie\u2019s choreographic work and teaching style is influenced by her formative years working with the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, certification in Body\/Mind Fitness, Core Energetics (Somatic Psychology) and her undergraduate work at University of Wisconsin-Madison.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nAbout the Exhibition
\nEbb of a Spring Tide is an exhibition of new sculptural works by Mary Mattingly exploring our relationship to coastal ecosystems and the shifting nature of rivers and water lines. The exhibition is on view Saturday, May 20 \u2013 September 10, 2023.<\/p>\n
Ebb of a Spring Tide features a 65-foot living sculpture titled Water Clock that is fabricated on-site in response to the Park\u2019s unique waterfront location along the East River – the place where the edges of land and water meet, the riparian zone. This monumental, scaffold structure includes edible vegetation and mirrors the cityscape across the East River, reflecting on our human impact to New York City\u2019s riparian edge. The clock\u2019s pulse is kept by East River water moving through the tubes, a reminder of a life support system and the delicate balance of coastal ecosystems.<\/p>\n
