{"id":7117,"date":"2026-06-30T01:54:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-30T01:54:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/socratessculpturepark-2026.kudos.nyc\/event\/400-years-of-inequality-a-peoples-observance\/"},"modified":"2026-07-01T07:49:58","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T07:49:58","slug":"400-years-of-inequality-a-peoples-observance","status":"publish","type":"event","link":"https:\/\/socratessculpturepark-2026.kudos.nyc\/nl\/event\/400-years-of-inequality-a-peoples-observance\/","title":{"rendered":"400 Years of Inequality: A People\u2019s Observance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2019 \u2022 12 \u2013 3 PM We invite the community to gather with us for \u201cA People\u2019s Observance For A Just Future\u201d in conjunction with the 400 Years of Inequality\u00a0initiative, aiming to nationally acknowledge and reflect upon the 400 years since Africans were first brought to Jamestown to be sold into bondage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe observance of this anniversary is a time when we denounce again the inequalities of the past and announce again our vision for a world of full equality for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the style of a teach-in, join artist Shaun Leonardo in collaboration with The Baccalaureate School for Global Education (BSGE) for an intergenerational sharing of knowledge oriented toward action-creating pathways and imagining possibilities of being in a country that remains constricting and controlling of its black and brown citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Special guests from Iyapo Repository lead a making activity to concretize our thoughts and discussions. This event is also framed by artist Dread Scott&#8217;s commission for the Park&#8217;s Broadway Billboard, &#8216;To The Avengers of the New World,&#8217; which acts as a thoughtful provocation to consider the legacies of slave rebellions in the US and the Caribbean.
