From its founding, Socrates has transformed a once-polluted industrial site into a landscape for public art, education, and environmental stewardship. This history shapes our belief that creative practice and ecological care are inseparable. Our annual programs—developed with more than 20 community and cultural partners—bring people together through art while strengthening the land that sustains us.
Strengthening Our Ecosystem, Supporting Our Community
Socrates sits on the East River in a FEMA-designated High-Risk Coastal Flood Zone and within an Environmental Justice Area where many residents have long experienced the impacts of pollution, limited access to green space, and historic disinvestment. Today, the Park serves artists, neighbors, and more than 12,000 NYCHA residents, as well as Title I schools across District 30—offering a rare public space where art, land, and community meet.
The Park’s location along the East River also makes it a critical stop on a regional migration corridor, supporting wildlife including the endangered Monarch butterfly. In recent years, we’ve expanded native plantings and introduced milkweed across the site—restoring habitat, increasing pollinator activity, and building toward a more resilient ecosystem.
This work parallels the upcoming NYC Parks Seawall Restoration Project, beginning in 2026, which will rebuild the shoreline to pre–Superstorm Sandy levels. Coordinating our ecological efforts with this major restoration will allow us to plant more native species, strengthen drainage and soil health, and help protect surrounding homes and businesses from future climate impacts.
